When I started working on Icon256 almost two years ago, I had a simple idea: could I create a clock that feels less like a piece of technology and more like a beautiful object that naturally belongs in a room?
At ThingPulse, I’ve spent years building products for makers, developers, and engineers. Icon256 was different. While it certainly contains plenty of engineering, I found myself spending just as much time thinking about typography, proportions, light, materials, and how the finished product would feel sitting on a shelf or desk.
It took far longer than I originally expected. There were countless prototypes, design revisions, firmware improvements, manufacturing challenges, and many moments where I questioned whether I would ever be satisfied with the result.
Looking back, I’m glad I didn’t settle.
Today, I’m excited to finally share Icon256.
Icon256 is a Wi-Fi connected word clock built around a 16×16 RGB LED matrix. Rather than displaying numbers, it reveals the current time in words while creating a subtle ambient light that becomes part of the room. It’s fully configurable, supports adjustable colors and brightness, and is designed to quietly complement your home or workspace.

I’m incredibly proud of how Icon256 has turned out. It’s one of the most ambitious products I’ve ever built, and I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed creating it.
